What is Sleep Deprivation and Deficiency?
Sleep deprivation - insufficient amount of sleep
Sleep deficiency- sleeping at the wrong time of time, not sleeping well, or sleep disorder
- Onset of sleep deficiency may lead to a lack of efficiency in tasks, lack of alertness, and feelings of fatigue
Sleep deprivation and deficiency are linked to many chronic diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and depression.
Sleep is important for:
- Healthy brain function and emotional well-being
- Physical health
- Daytime performance and safety
Strategies to improve sleep:
- Go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday (establish a routine)
- Avoid any strenuous activities that may increase alertness or brain activity an hour prior to going to bed
- Limit/avoid nicotine and caffeine
- Do not eat large, heavy meals before bed, give your body several hours to rest and digest
- Take a warm bath and use relaxation techniques
